We are happy for this historic moment in time with the confirmation of Associate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. What a beautiful time to be alive. Tears flowed as Vice President Kamala Harris read the vote of the Senate. A final vote of 53-47 was called and applause immediately filled the chamber. Several members of the Senate quickly filed out of the room. A few were late and missing in action, holding up the process for no good reason. Still, nothing and no one could take the joy away from this historic day.
Such a historic day, that is, Thursday, April 7, 2022, a date that many will remember for years to come. A fact to be listed in American History school books of students of all ages all over the country. This is history in the making.
If you can see it, you can be it. Educators, School Administrators and Psychologists around the globe know of this fundamental notion. With the news of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman Supreme Court Justice, little black girls can see it and wish to be it. Soon, a Black woman will sit on the highest court of this great nation, more qualified than most. Taking up time and space bringing along, her grace, her poise and her academic and judicial intelligence after one hundred and fifteen years. This moment is long overdue. We’ve patiently and impatiently waited. We are finally here?
Recently, I visited Washington DC on family business and after noticing our Nation’s Capitol casually sitting in the backdrop of a few snapshots (see featured photo), I was reminded me of this great news. I smiled without thinking, ever grateful for the totality of this moment. The time is finally, here and now.
